For many countries around the world, June is recognised as Pride Month – an annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s also become an awareness month to encourage diversity, equity and inclusion throughout society and business.

The History of Pride

The concept of Pride Month began with the Stonewall riots in 1969 after a police raid at a gay bar in New York City. The riots were for gay liberation, equal rights and to end hate crimes. The uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States and was commemorated on the last Sunday in June as “Gay Pride Day.” The day turned into a month-long celebration of street parties, pride parades, concerts, workshops and memorials for those who have been lost.

Today, Pride month is celebrated across the world, recognising the positive impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history and continue to contribute.

Beyond The Month

At Dev Team, we recognise Pride Month to show our support of the LGBTQ+ community and their right to equality, inclusion and acceptance in society. But Pride is more than a month..

That is why we have pledged to go beyond the month by reviewing our own business practices to ensure diversity, inclusion and equity is embedded in our culture.

Taking Significant Steps

How we are ensuring we deliver on this pledge…

  • Continuing to learn to echo DEI principles through workshops and webinars
  • Practicing Bayanihan by supporting a local LGBTQ+ non-profit
  • Launching an open space for employee concerns and feedback.
  • Showing solidarity publicly
  • Outlining a DEI policy within the next 12 months to deliver on our promise

Outcome

To put it simply – we want everyone at Dev Team to feel valued and respected. By ensuring we create a safe and inclusive work environment we want our staff to feel proud.
