In today’s digital age, the importance of wellness in the workplace, especially within the tech industry, cannot be overstated. As a development agency, 99% of our staff work on computers. Sitting in front of a screen all day is a requirement, but it can impact your health. That’s why this Wellness Month we’re encouraging you guys to implement simple practices to take care in tech.

Importance of Wellness in the Digital Environment

Wellness is not commonly spoken about in our world, yet many roles in this industry can be isolating, reduce movement, and cause health problems. So why isn’t it a priority? By making a conscious effort to enhance your wellbeing, you can mitigate these risks, boost productivity, and enhance overall job satisfaction. Here are some tips to try out during Wellness Month…

The 20-20-20 Rule

Prolonged screen time can lead to eye strain, headaches, and reduced productivity. One effective way to manage screen time and maintain eye health is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away from your screen at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple practice helps rest your eyes and reduce strain.

Let’s Get Physical

Physical activity is crucial for maintaining health and fitness, particularly for those of us who spend most of our day sitting. Incorporating physical activity into your daily work routine can make a big difference. During Wellness month our staff are taking part in a ‘Stepathon’ to increase their step count. If you’re up for the challenge – give it a go! Otherwise, remember to move regularly and practise stretches to release tension in your body from sitting.

Mental Wellbeing in an Isolated Industry

Working as a web developer can be isolating. Many of us work remotely, which has its perks but can also significantly reduce social interaction and take its toll on your mental health. Companies have a responsibility to foster a sense of community (cough, cough take a look how we’re doing it). Where as you can keep your mental health in check by making these steps part of your daily routine:

  1. Take regular breaks: Grab water, enjoy healthy snacks, or step outside for fresh air.
  2. Walking meetings: Walk during meetings when you can to boost productivity.
  3. Mindfulness breaks: Reduce stress and improve concentration with breath-work.
  4. Engage with colleagues: Social connections can enhance your mood and wellbeing.
  5. Healthy work-life balance: Plan activities you enjoy outside of work.

The Right Setup

Proper ergonomics are vital for preventing physical discomfort and enhancing productivity. Everyone should:

  • Ensure your desk, chair, and computer setup support proper posture.
  • Have a dedicated workspace with limited distractions to improve focus.
  • Position yourself near natural light to boost your mood and energy levels.

Nutrition

Good nutrition plays a critical role in maintaining energy and focus throughout the day. Opt for healthy snacks and remember to stay hydrated for optimum performance.
